DIY Thanksgiving Decorations

Thanksgiving is a holiday that can be tough to decorate for.  After all, it is smack dab in the middle of two of the easiest holidays to decorate for – Halloween and Christmas.  Today I shared some of my favorite DIY Thanksgiving decorations with Page Crawford on WNCN Today.  Decorating for Thanksgiving can be easier than you think, even if you aren't terribly crafty.

     Repurposing Halloween.
o   Turkey Toes.  Most of us usually overbuy Halloween candy, so why not put it to good use?  Take your leftover candy corn, place it in a small bag, add a “Turkey Toes” tag and you have the perfect Thanksgiving favor for all of your dinner guests.  TIP:  These also make the perfect holiday treat for all of the kids at school or everyone in your office.

o   Pumpkin Place Cards.  Did you buy a few adorable mini pumpkins for Halloween?  Don’t throw them away!  Simply add a name tag and a few decorative leaves and you have an adorable Thanksgiving Place Card.  TIP:  Buy a variety of shapes and sizes to create a mini pumpkin family.

     Thanksgiving Centerpiece.
o   Simply Festive Candles.  Thanksgiving is a holiday centered around the dinner table, so why not focus your decorating energies there.  You really don’t have to get fancy or spend much money to create a fun and festive centerpiece.  Simply take a hurricane (or any large candle holder), fill it with popcorn and add a candle.  Voila!  You can even add a few leaves from your yard for a little extra color.  TIP:  Turn this into a fun family activity by having your little ones search for the perfect leaves.

     Table Entertainment.
o   Personalized Placemats.  To keep your little Thanksgiving guests entertained during dinner, create personalized coloring placemats!  Simply pick your favorite coloring pages from www.TwistyNoodle.com and print them on cardstock for the perfect placemat, just add crayons.  TIP:  If you are extra crafty laminate each placemat so that they can be re-used all Fall.

If you are worried about having little ones color at the dinner table, or Uncle Bob spilling cranberry sauce on your lace tablecloth, forget the tablecloth and use kraft paper!  If you don’t have a large roll of kraft paper get creative and create a patchwork table covering with paper grocery bags.  You can’t beat a free, recyclable tablecloth!

Simply Spooky

With Halloween right around the corner, there is no time to waste pulling together your Halloween party.  Today I shared some of my favorite simply spooky last minute party tips with Page Crawford on WNCN Today.  It is easier than you think to throw together an unforgettable Halloween party for guests of all ages!

     Simple Sweets.
o   S’mores Shots.  Place 1 Graham Cracker, 1 Mini Hersey’s Bar and 2 Ghost Marshmallows in an orange shot glass and you have a simply scrumptious s’mores shots.  And let’s be honest, is it really a party without s’mores?
o   Oreo Pops.  If you don’t have the time or culinary abilities to make cake pops, simply put a Halloween Oreo on a lollipop stick and you have an adorable Oreo pop.  If you want to get a little fancy, dip the Oreos in white chocolate and decorate them as little ghost pops.

     Fun and Easy Decorations.
o   Mustache Pumpkins.  If you don’t have the time or patience to carve a pumpkin, decorate your pumpkin with a mustache.  You can even get fancy with a paint pen or face stickers.

     Delicious Drinks.
o   Candy Corn Martini.  Why should the kids have all of the fun?  Serve your grownup guests Candy Corn Martinis made with Candy Corn infused Vodka and Butterscotch Schnapps.

     Sugar-Free Treats.
o   Halloween Fun Favors.  Halloween favors for the kids at school or your trick-or-treaters don’t have to be chalk full of sugar.  Wrap up a Halloween cookie cutter from the Dollar Store with a mini Play-Do for a fun alternative to candy.

A huge thank you to everyone at WNCN for having me on again!

Have a wonderful Halloween!  And try not to eat all of the candy before the trick-or-treaters arrive ;-)

Fun New Breyers Recipe!

Guess what?!? It's ice cream time again!  This month I'm lucky enough to share with you a brand new recipe from our good friend Clare Crespo who you may remember brought us Mint Chocolate Chimps which were sooooo popular in August.  The fun recipe I have to share with you today is none other than an adorable Bookworm.  Those of you who have followed me for a while will know that sour gummy worms are my all-time favorite, so I of course recommend using them instead of plain old gummy worms ;-)

Give Clare's recipe a try and let me know what you think!

Bookworm

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 graham cracker
  • 1/2 cup Breyers® Natural Vanilla Ice Cream, slightly softened
  • 1 gummy worm candy
  • Decorative icing (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Place graham cracker on small dish. Place Breyers® Natural Vanilla Ice Cream on top of graham cracker and carefully smooth to edges using butter knife or small spatula. Use knife to carve line down center of ice cream to resemble center of open book. Smooth around edges so that ice cream is same shape as graham cracker.
  2. Place in freezer until very firm. Remove from freezer and use fork to scrape lines around ice cream sides to resemble pages in book. Insert gummy worm into ice cream. Write a few words or letters on the pages of book with decorative icing if you wish! Serve immediately or freeze until ready to serve.

Tip from the Clueless Chick: Make your bookwork extra creepy for Halloween by adding a few drops of blood (i.e. red food coloring) and writing BOO or R.I.P.
