DIY Halloween Treats

Halloween is traditionally a candy-filled holiday and having the same candy year after year can get a little boring, until now. Here are a few ideas to make Halloween treats even more fun and even sugar-free:

Creepy Candy
o   Ghost Suckers.  A fun and easy way to dress up a sucker on Halloween is to turn it into a little ghost.  All you will need are your favorite suckers, white napkins, small rubber bands and a sharpie.  Simply wrap the white napkin around your sucker, secure the napkin with the rubber band and draw on a ghost face (two dot eyes and an ‘O’ for the mouth’).  Kids will go crazy over these ghostly treats.

o   Candy Hands.  Instead of making a trick or treat bag, why not create a creepy candy hand?  Simply pick up some disposable gloves at the craft or grocery store and fill them with candy.  Don’t forget to use long and thin candy, like Smarties, to form the fingers then stuff the gloves with all of your favorite candy and tie the top with a small piece of ribbon or twine.

Rice Krispy Treat Pumpkins

Edible Pumpkins
o   Pumpkin Krispy Treats.  Rice krispy treats are one of the easiest homemade deserts which is why they are my go to for any DIY holiday treat.  To make the perfect Halloween rice krispy treat, simply turn the traditional treat into a pumpkin!  You will need rice krispy cereal, marshmallows, butter, red and yellow food coloring, tooties roll midgets and plastic sandwich bags.  Once you have melted your marshmallows and butter, add the food coloring to turn the marshmallow mix orange (2 parts yellow; one part red).  Then use the sandwich bags as gloves, coated with butter to easily form small orange balls and insert the tooties roll midget at the pumpkin stem.  Eat and enjoy!

Candy-Free Treats
o   Play doh Favors.  If you are looking for a fun alternative to a candy Halloween treat for toddlers, look no further than a little play doh.  Pick up a few Halloween play doh colors and Halloween cookie cutters and wrap both together as a fun candy-free and toddler friendly Halloween treat that parents will thank you for.

DIY Halloween Costumes

Halloween is just around the corner, which means it is time to decided on Halloween costumes!  For those of your who are a bit crafty, and those of you who don’t have a crafty bone in your body, I shared some fabulously simple DIY Halloween costume ideas with Page Crawford on Fox46 Good Day Carolinas:

            Your Favorite Character
o   A Free Character Costume.  We have all seen the ultra expensive character costumes at the store, but who wants to spend a ton of money on a costume when you can easily create a character costume with a modern twist for free?  After youve selected your character of the year, recreate his/her look with items from your closet.  I easily pulled together a Snow White costume by throwing together a pair of yellow slacks with a blue top, red necklace, shoes and hair bow as well as a bright red apple.  Maybe I will even dress up my little ones as dwarfs.

Sports Fans
o   Put Your Jersey to Good Use.  Are you or your little one a big sports fan?  Why not dress up as your favorite player or a super fan?  All you need is your favorite jersey and a couple of props and you have a perfectly sporty Halloween costume. TIP:  If your childs school does not allow Halloween costumes, wearing a jersey on Halloween is an easy way for the to feel a little dressed up!

Make Grandma Proud
o   Mid-Morning Prep.  If you are looking for a quick and free idea for your Halloween costume, grab a bathrobe and shower cap or a pair of fuzzy slippers.  This Grandmas uniform is the perfect last minute costume for the whole family.  You can even add some additional flare with curlers, a bath loofa, or cold cream.  Just dont forget to layer appropriately for the weather and grab your flannel bathrobe if there is a cold snap on Halloween.

Crafty Accessories
o   Snake Clips.  One of the easiest ways to dress up for Halloween is to pick a few well-placed accessories, like a few snake hair clips!  These creepy little clips are very easy to make, all you need are a few small rubber snakes, hair clips and your trusty hot glue gun.  Simply dab the hot glue on the clip and attach the snake.  Then all you need to do is strategically place a small snake clip in your hair and see who notices first.  TIP: If you are up for making a bunch of snake clips, why not turn this into a medusa costume?

Simply Spooky Halloween Decorations

Once you have picked out your Halloween costume and stocked up on pumpkins it is time to start decorating! On my first appearance on FOX46 Good Day Carolinas (YEA!) I shared some of my favorite Halloween decoration tips with Page Crawford:

Spooky Lanterns
o   Mummy Lanterns.  These adorably spooky Halloween lanterns make the perfect centerpiece or decorations for your window and all you need are mason jars, gauze and googlie eyes.  Simply wrap gauze around the mason jars, glue the googlie eyes on the front and add a candle (a traditional or battery operated tea candle is perfect).

Personalized Drinks
o   Snake Wineglass Markers.  If you are serving wine or witches brew at your Halloween party, don’t forget to have festive wineglass markers on hand.  Nothing is creepier than a few rubber snakes wrapped around the stems of your wine glasses.  Or what about plastic spider rings?  Put those creepy crawlers to good use as adorable and quite inexpensive wineglass markers.

Fun and Edible Centerpiece
o   Candy Corn Candle.  Decorate your Halloween table with a tempting candy corn candle centerpiece with a glass vase, candy corn and a candle.  Really, thats all you need to do to create a Halloween centerpiece that looks a little too tempting.  Since you are using candy corn in your centerpiece you can even get away with using this centerpiece well into November.
